How to Access Gmail

This wikiHow teaches you how to open your Gmail inbox on a computer or mobile platform. If you want to be able to view multiple accounts at once, you can add accounts to your browser or mobile item after signing into one account. Keep in mind that you must have a Gmail account in order to access Gmail.

Method 1: On Desktop

1. Open your web browser.

  • If you want to open Gmail on a computer, you can do so from any web browser (e.g., Firefox, Safari, Chrome, etc.).
  • If you want to use Google-specific features of Gmail, such as offline mail, you’ll need to open Gmail in Google Chrome.

2. Open Gmail. Go to https://www.gmail.com/ in your web browser. This will open the Gmail login page.

3. Enter your email address. Type your Gmail email address into the “Email or phone” text box in the middle of the page.

4. Click NEXT. It’s a blue button below the “Email or phone” text box. This will take you to the password entry page.

5. Enter your password. Type in the password used to access your Gmail account.

6. Click NEXT. It’s below the “Password” text box. As long as your password matches your username, doing this will open your Gmail inbox.

Method 2: On iPhone

1. Open your iPhone’s App Store. Tap the App Store app icon, which resembles a white “A” on a light-blue background.

2. Tap Search. It’s a tab at the bottom of the screen. Doing so brings up the “Search” page.

3. Search for Gmail. Tap the search bar at the top of the screen, then type in gmail and tap Search in the keyboard.

4. Tap GET. It’s to the right of the “Gmail – Email by Google” heading.

5. Enter your Touch ID when prompted. Doing so will allow Gmail to begin downloading onto your iPhone.

If your iPhone doesn’t have Touch ID or you don’t use Touch ID for App Store verification, you’ll instead tap Install at the bottom of the screen and then enter your Apple ID password when prompted.

6. Open Gmail. Tap OPEN in the App Store, or tap the red-and-white Gmail app icon on one of your iPhone’s Home Screens.

7. Tap SIGN IN. It’s at the bottom of the screen.

8. Sign into Gmail. If there’s no Google Account signed in on your iPhone, you’ll select the Google option when prompted and then do the following:

  • Enter your email address.
  • Tap NEXT.
  • Enter your Gmail password.
  • Tap NEXT.
  • If you see your Google Account listed on Gmail, you can skip the login process by tapping the white switch to the right of your account’s name.

9. Wait for your inbox to load. Once you’re done signing into Gmail, your inbox should load within a few seconds.

Method 3: On Android

1. Make sure you have the Gmail app. Open your Android’s App Drawer by tapping

on the Home screen (or by swiping up on some Androids), then look for the red-and-white Gmail app.

  • Virtually all Androids come with Gmail pre-installed, so you should be able to find Gmail in the App Drawer.
  • If you don’t have Gmail installed on your Android for some reason, open the Google Play Store, then search for Gmail and tap INSTALL on its page to install it.

2. Open Gmail. Tap the Gmail app icon, which resembles a red “M” on a white background.

3. Tap TAKE ME TO GMAIL. It’s at the bottom of the screen.

If you aren’t currently logged into your preferred Google Account on your Android, you may instead tap Add another email address, tap Google, and enter your email address and password as prompted.

4. Enter your password if prompted. If asked for your Gmail password to log in, type it into the provided text field and tap NEXT.

Since you use your Google Account to log into your Android itself, you usually won’t have to enter your password.

5. Wait for your inbox to load. Once you’ve finished selecting your account and logging in, your Gmail inbox should load within a few seconds.

Method 4: Signing into Multiple Accounts on Desktop

1. Open Gmail. Go to https://www.gmail.com/ in your computer’s browser. This will open your Gmail inbox if you’re logged in.

If you aren’t logged in, enter your email address and password when prompted.

2. Click your profile icon. It’s a circular icon in the top-right corner of the page. Clicking it prompts a drop-down menu to appear.

If your account doesn’t have a profile image, you’ll click the colored circle with the account name’s first initial instead.

3. Click Add account. This is in the bottom-left corner of the drop-down menu. Doing so opens a new page with your saved Google Accounts listed.

4. Click Use another account. It’s at the bottom of the list of accounts.

If you want to use an existing account that’s listed but signed out, click the account name and then enter the password when prompted.

5. Enter the email address. When prompted, type in the email address of the Gmail account you want to add.

6. Click NEXT. It’s a blue button below the “Email or phone” text box.

7.Enter your password. Type in the password you use to log into your Gmail account.

8.  Click NEXT. It’s below the “Password” text box. Doing so will both add the account to your list of currently signed-in accounts and open the account’s inbox.

9. Switch between accounts. If you want to switch back to your other signed-in account, click the current profile circle in the top-right corner of the page, then click the account you want to view in the drop-down menu.

Method 5: Signing into Multiple Accounts on Mobile

1. Open Gmail. Tap the Gmail app icon, which resembles a red “M” on a white background. This will open your Gmail inbox if you’re logged in.

If you aren’t logged in, enter your email address and password when prompted.

2. Tap ☰. It’s in the top-left corner of the screen. A pop-out menu will appear.

3. Tap your current email address. This is at the top of the pop-out menu. Doing so prompts a drop-down menu to appear.

4. Tap Manage accounts. It’s in the drop-down menu. A new menu will open.

5. Tap Add account. This option is in the menu.

6. Tap Google. It’s at the top of the list of options.

You may be prompted to allow Google to sign you in. If so, tap Continue or ALLOW.

7. Enter your email address. Tap the “Email or phone” text box, then type in the email address for the account you want to use.

8. Tap NEXT. It’s below the text box.

9. Enter your password. Type in the password you use to log into your Gmail account.

10. Tap NEXT. It’s at the bottom of the page. Doing so will both add the account to your list of currently signed-in accounts and open the account’s inbox.

11. Switch between accounts. If you want to switch to a different signed-in account, tap ☰, then tap the account’s profile image at the top of the menu.
